Congenital Rubella Syndrome
- Infection of fetus exposed to maternal rubella during first trimester of pregnancy
- Retinopathy, microphthalmia (small eye), cataract, glaucoma, corneal opacification, or uveitis, present in over 70% of cases
- Fine speckling of retina called "salt-and-pepper retinopathy" that does not impair vision
- Microphthalmia, cataract, glaucoma, corneal scar, and uveitis often impair vision
- Refer baby with microphthalmia, cataract, glaucoma, corneal scar, uveitis, or retinopathy to ophthalmologist urgently
- Cataract, glaucoma, corneal scar, uveitis may require treatment to preserve or restore vision
- Retinopathy rarely requires treatment and typically remains stationary
