Congenital Rubella Syndrome

  • Infection of fetus exposed to maternal rubella during first trimester of pregnancy
  • Retinopathy, microphthalmia (small eye), cataract, glaucoma, corneal opacification, or uveitis, present in over 70% of cases
  • Fine speckling of retina called "salt-and-pepper retinopathy" that does not impair vision
  • Microphthalmia, cataract, glaucoma, corneal scar, and uveitis often impair vision
  • Refer baby with microphthalmia, cataract, glaucoma, corneal scar, uveitis, or retinopathy to ophthalmologist urgently
  • Cataract, glaucoma, corneal scar, uveitis may require treatment to preserve or restore vision
  • Retinopathy rarely requires treatment and typically remains stationary
