Case 140 Diagnosis

Medium-sized choroidal melanoma with associated subretinal hemorrhage and exudative retinal detachment

Differential Diagnosis

  • Hemorrhagic suprachoroidal detachment: often associated with hypotony, absence of intrinsic vascularity on A and B scans
  • Age-related macular degeneration with subretinal neovascularization and hemorrhage: evidence of macular degeneration in contralateral eye, fluorescein angiogram shows choroidal neovascular membrane
  • Nevus: smaller lesions, most difficult to differentiate from a small melanoma, not associated with subretinal hemorrhage
  • Metastasis: cream colored, rarely associated with subretinal hemorrhage
