Ten Days Before Surgery
Contact your primary care physician if you are taking any of the medications listed below so he or she can advise you.
- Stop taking aspirin or aspirin-like products unless otherwise directed by your surgeon. Aspirin can cause bleeding problems. If your primary care physician has prescribed aspirin for arthritis or some other condition, make arrangements to take another medication before and after surgery.
- Stop taking Ibuprofen, Advil, Motrin, Nuprin, Aleve, Relafen, Naprosyn, Diclofenac, Naproxen, Voltaren, Daypro, Feldene, Clinoril, Lodine, Indocin, Orudis and other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications. Some pain relievers also cause bleeding problems. If you are not sure whether you can take a certain medicine, please contact one of our nurses at 734-763-7247.
- You may take plain or extra strength Tylenol, or another brand of acetaminophen for pain or discomfort before and after surgery. Plan to have acetaminophen with you at home. Tylenol with codeine, Ultram, Vicodin, Vioxx, Celebrex, Bextra and Mobic also may be taken before and after surgery.
- If you are taking an anticoagulant (blood thinner) such as aspirin, Coumadin, Ticlid, Plavix or Aggrenox for your heart, please ask your primary care physician about stopping this medication before surgery. Your primary care physician may need to speak with your surgeon about these medications.
- If you have been instructed to get tested elsewhere for such things as eye measurements, photographs, EKGs, x-rays or blood tests before surgery, please allow 10 days for results to be faxed to the Kellogg Eye Center at 734-763-6864.
