Meet the newest member of our corneal and refractive surgery team

Shahzad I. Mian, M.D., has joined the Cornea and External Disease, and Cataract and Refractive Surgery service at the University of Michigan Kellogg Eye Center, where he will specialize in the medical and surgical management of corneal disorders and refractive surgery. In addition to his clinical work, he will hold a faculty position in the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences at the University of Michigan Health System. Dr. Mian will also continue his research on the role of metalloproteinases in corneal infections and neovascularization.

Dr. Mian graduated summa cum laude from Emory University School of Medicine. He completed his ophthalmology residency at Wills Eye Hospital in Philadelphia, where he was chief resident and received the Marlon Maus Award for Most Distinguished Patient Care. Before coming to Kellogg, he completed a cornea and refractive surgery fellowship at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary of Harvard Medical School.

As a member of Kellogg’s Refractive Surgery Clinic, Dr. Mian joins a team of recognized corneal specialists who perform a variety of laser and non-laser procedures to correct vision. The newest procedure, recently approved by the FDA, is Conductive Keratoplasty (CK), a non-laser technique that corrects for hyperopia or farsightedness. Kellogg also offers many other options for vision correction, including the more widely known LASIK surgery for nearsightedness. The Kellogg Eye Center’s Cornea and External Disease Clinic evaluates and treats diseases of the cornea, including dystrophies, infections, corneal swelling, dry eyes, and injuries.

The W.K. Kellogg Eye Center at the University of Michigan Health System is a nationally recognized center for vision care and research. The Kellogg Eye Center attracts top funding for research to save vision, offers professional and community education, and provides routine and highly specialized eye care to some 87,000 patients each year.
