Dr. Paul Lichter Receives International Glaucoma Award

ANN ARBOR, MI – Paul R. Lichter, M.D., Chair and F. Bruce Fralick Professor of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences at the University of Michigan, received the A. Anagnostakis and A. Trantas Gold Medal of Merit and Honor from the Greek Glaucoma Society at the 13th International Glaucoma Congress. The annual meeting, held in Athens this year, was established so that internationally-known glaucoma specialists could share new developments in glaucoma treatment and research with ophthalmologists from around the world.

Dr. Lichter, who is also Director of the U-M Kellogg Eye Center, was recognized for his leadership in glaucoma research and clinical care. In addition to receiving the medal, he delivered two named lectures. The Anagnostakis-Trantas Lecture reported on Recent Findings from the Collaborative Initial Glaucoma Treatment Study. Dr. Lichter served as chair of this multi-center clinical trial, which also evaluated how treatment affected the quality of life of the patients enrolled in the study. In addition, he presented the Fronimopoulos Lecture, Pigmentary Glaucoma: Is It a Real Disease?

Currently Dr. Lichter is Secretary-General of the Academia Ophthalmologica Internationalis, and is past president of numerous professional organizations, including the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the Association of University Professors of Ophthalmology, the American Ophthalmological Society, the Pan American Association of Ophthalmology, the Pan American Glaucoma Society, and the Michigan Ophthalmological Society.
