Cornea and External Disease Fellowship

Program Description
The Cornea Service at the University of Michigan is a consulting service in corneal and external disease and refractive surgery with an emphasis on keratoplasty. It offers two fellowships of one year. Two residents and two fellows are on the Cornea Service at any one time. Approximately 250 keratoplasties and 400 cataract surgeries are performed annually. We currently have a Technolas 217 excimer laser and an Intralase laser and perform LASIK, PRK, intracorneal rings, and conductive keratoplasty. It is anticipated that fellows would assist on 75 to 100 keratoplasties, perform 40 to 60, and participate in a program of laboratory and clinical research. The fellows will also do refractive surgery. The fellows' responsibility is to the Cornea and External Ocular Disease Service, with clinics during all weekdays.

Glaucoma Fellowship

Program Description
A one-year glaucoma fellowship is offered each year to highly qualified individuals who will have completed residency training in a program certified by the appropriate accreditation bodies in the United States or Canada.

The fellow will supplement his/her education by organizing our biweekly journal club, by presenting cases at Grand Rounds bimonthly, and by supervising some of our resident surgeries. Techniques to be mastered include: laser procedures, glaucoma filtering surgery, rational use of wound-modulation agents, releasable suture closure techniques, trabeculectomy combined with cataract extraction, tube-shunt implants, management of the failing bleb, exposure to goniotomy, trabeculotomy and endocyclophotocoagulation.

In addition, the fellow will learn to perform and interpret a variety of clinical tests including visual fields, optic disc analysis, ocular coherence tomography, optic disc image analysis, and ultrasound biomicroscopy. While the goal of our fellowship is to train outstanding clinical glaucoma subspecialists, there are numerous research opportunities available with both our clinicians and basic scientists.

Julia Richards, Ph.D., conducts full-time glaucoma molecular genetics research, which complements our clinical program.

Fellows can undertake clinical and basic studies utilizing the extensive expertise in all phases of our glaucoma program.

Neuro-Ophthalmology Fellowship

Program Description
The core of the neuro-ophthalmology fellowship is patient examination under staff supervision. Outpatients are drawn from the community practices of the tri-state area (Michigan, Ohio, and Indiana), as well as the clinics of the University of Michigan Medical Center. The inpatients are drawn from the Medical Center Hospitals and the VA Hospital situated five minutes away. The Neuro-ophthalmology Service has responsibility both for neuro-ophthalmology patients and for general ophthalmology inpatient consultation. The fellow's responsibilities initially are similar to those of the ophthalmology resident, but as the fellowship progresses, in time the fellow is given graduated supervision. The fellow is expected to devote considerable time and effort to formal teaching and either clinical or basic neuroscience research. Opportunities are available to join ongoing projects or initiate a new project. The fellowship is open to graduates of accredited training programs in either ophthalmology or neurology. An on-site interview is a prerequisite.
