Bartley R. Frueh, M.D.
Research Projects
Levator force generation and ptosis; blepharospasm; Graves eye disease; studies in extra-ocular muscle physiology
Dr. Bartley Frueh has developed methods for measuring the strength of the levator muscle as well as the orbicularis oculi muscles in humans. The former has been shown to improve the ability to diagnose the course of ptosis. The latter is useful for monitoring the recovery of seventh nerve palsy and the effects of botulinum toxin on the eyelids. He has done extensive work examining the physiology of the extra-ocular muscles.
Current projects include revisiting the effects of botulinum toxin (Botox) on the management of facial spasm. He is also evaluating the efficacy of a new procedure for eyelid surgery in patients with Graves eye disease. Dr. Frueh also studies the effects of managing a particular type of blockage of the tear drainage system, as well as an aspect of upper eyelid dynamics.
